What FPV changes
First person view sends the aircraft camera’s live picture to goggles or a screen. It can create an immersive sense of motion, but the camera view is only part of the surroundings. Learning to manage the aircraft and its environment comes before trying dramatic footage.
A stabilised camera drone and a manually flown FPV aircraft can feel very different. Check the flight modes and controller options for the exact model. Do not assume that a feature shown in a promotional video is available with every controller or suitable for a first flight.
Check where you can fly in Australia
Goggles need extra planning.
CASA says outdoor recreational FPV requires membership of a model aircraft association with the appropriate approval, or your own CASA approval. Approved association operations have conditions, including approved locations. Having someone stand beside you is not, by itself, permission to fly with goggles.
CASA also distinguishes enclosed indoor recreational FPV and commercial operations. Read its current FPV guidance below before choosing a location or booking a shoot.
Buy a compatible system
- Aircraft and goggles: confirm the exact pairing and supported software versions.
- Controller: check whether the kit includes a motion controller or a conventional stick controller, and which modes each supports.
- Power: account for aircraft, controller and goggle batteries, plus the required chargers.
- Recording: check where full-quality footage is saved and which memory cards are required.
- Protection: understand the limitations of guards and any optional care plan.
Use a gradual learning plan
Start with the manufacturer’s first-use tutorial and manual for your model. Learn the emergency brake or pause procedure, landing behaviour and lost-signal response where those features are supported. Practise basic control in the appropriate mode and an authorised setting before attempting more demanding flight.
For DJI Avata 2, the official links below include first-use videos, controller guidance and footage export instructions. If you own a different aircraft, follow that model’s documentation instead.
Build confidence with simple, repeatable manoeuvres. A smooth short clip is a useful goal; close passes, gaps and acrobatics are not necessary for an enjoyable first FPV experience.

Compare the DJI Avata 2 Fly More Combo (Three Batteries) with the DJI Avata 360 Fly More Combo (RC 2) by checking each listing’s aircraft, viewing device, controller and battery configuration. These are different kits: do not assume goggles or a motion controller are included simply because a drone appears in an FPV comparison.
